About Me

I am Max Tate, a retired electrician with a lifelong passion for creating interesting wooden objects.

Working with wood is a joyful experience to me.

Recently I have concentrated my efforts on using the wood lathe, exploring the use of tools and techniques to cut, shape, and finish this wonderful medium.

The raw material can be from a gnarly old log to a sawn blank, but I know there will be hidden beauty inside, you just have to cut and shape until you find it. If I'm successful in bringing out this natural beauty, I'm well pleased and spurred on to create more.

I am inspired by some excellent woodturners who have made their work public, I see new shapes, decoration techniques and the novel ways they have worked with the wood. This makes me wonder how they managed to make that and to try something similar myself, and sometimes I manage to produce a nice piece from these new ideas.

Hopefully I can also inspire other woodturners to try something new, as I feel this is what keeps the interest going.
